Necessary Information required for conducting a Novelty Search.

The analyst conducting the novelty search will require a detailed disclosure of the invention. Additional information such as drawings and figures are also useful to get a clear understanding of the invention.

An inventor must provide answers to the following questions describe the invention:

  1. Brief identification of the invention
  2. Background to the invention / Prior arts known
    1. What is the generic technical problem addressed by the invention?
    2. Is the problem newly identified or was it already known?
    3. If already known, how was the problem solved before?
    4. Is that known solution non-ideal in some aspects?
  3. Description of the invention
    1. What is your solution to the problem?
    2. What are the essential elements of the invention i.e. what must be at least present to make it work?
    3. What are the example(s) of the invention? Highlighting the new features.
    4. What are the additional benefits from your solution versus existing solutions?
  4. Categorization of the invention
    1. Does your invention result from a combination of known elements, whereby the combination provides a synergy?
    2. Does your invention result from a deletion of an element from an existing combination of elements?
    3. Does your invention result from a selection of parameters whereby a special effect is observed?
    4. Does your invention result from a new application of a known element for a different purpose?
    5. Where else would you envisage your invention being applied?
